Installing and Configuring DynamicURLS - The Baby Steps

Dynamic URLS Manager
User Guide
Dynamic URLS Installation

Unzip the package that you downloaded, and upload all files exactly as they were extracted from the zip file.

Upload these files to the lowest folder that you want to use for Dynamic URLS.
For the best Purl affect it is advisable to use the root directory of your website
e.g.: http://www.yoursite.com

* Do Not change the name of the admin folder!

After the files are successfully uploaded, YOU MUST chmod the directory of the installation and the purl_admin folder to 777. The script needs these permissions the create the needed folders during the installation process. If you don't then your server will most likely deny the installation! Not doing this, could cause the installation to not operate properly, depending on your server set up.

Run the file install.php , and follow the prompts. Some of the data is not editable, and some settings are set to the default settings, which you can change. Make sure that your mysql information is correctly inputted. You do not need to set up a database for the script to run, the install script will take care of that for you, but you do need to enter a valid mysql username, password, and database name. Some hosts require a prefix added to the database name, so make sure to include that if your host requires that.

Details:

Root Url: This is the base URL of the page you are in right now. You cannot edit this field. It will act as the starting point for all of your purl campaigns.

Root Directory: The same as the above location, except it is how the server finds the path to the files. The install script already knows this information so you won't need to enter it.

Admin Directory: The directory that will store your Dynamic URLS - Manager Admin. You cannot edit this location. It must remain the same in order for the script to operate properly.

Invalid Url: This is the page that users will be sent to when they aren't supposed to be viewing the Dynamic URLS page. If the page they are trying to view is not in the campaign database, the script will send them away. You can send them to any page on your site, or any other site. Defaults to http://yoursite.com/invalid.html

Admin Username :The username used to gain access to your Dynamic URLS Admin. Defaults to admin.

Admin Password :The password used to gain access to your Dynamic URLS admin. Defaults to admin.

Mysql Username: The username you use to access your mysql database. (Provided by your Web host)

Mysql Password: The password you use to access your mysql database. (Provided by your Web host)

Mysql Hostname: The host name used to access your mysql server. Usually it is localhost, but some hosts may use a different setting. If you are not sure, then check the documentation for your hosting company. Defaults to localhost.

Mysql Database name: Can be any name that you want the database to be. If the database already exists it will not harm it, the Dynamic URLS tables will just be added to it. If the database does not exist the script will create it for you. If you are running more than one copy of purl manager on your website, then make sure each installation has a unique database name. Defaults to purl.

Admin Email Address: Your email address. Not used so much in the Lite version, but many of the add on modules will use this.

Your Site Title: The title of your site. Not used in the Lite version, but some add on modules will need this information.

After you have all of the settings entered correctly, click submit, and the script should ake care of the rest.

The installation script will attempt to delete the installation filewhen it is complete, in order to avoid any hack attempts, but if your permissions are not set to 777 the script may not be able to complete this process. The admin script will not work until this file is removed, so please follow the warning if you receive one that states that it was not able to remove the file, in which case you will need to manually remove it.

Running a Campaign

When you first Install Dynamic URLS, you will have 1 user set up, and one template set up for you to use as an example.

Users

The first step in setting up a campaign, is to set up your user database.
To do this, simply click on the "User Tab".
In the sub menu, click on "Add New Users"

Dynamic URLS - Add Users

Fill in the information for the user and hit submit.
Repeat this step for every user you need to set up in your campaign.

Next create your Dynamic URLS Page template.

Templates

Click on the Templates Tab, and choose whether you want to use the Raw HTML Editor or the WYSIWYG editor.

If you are not familiar with HTML, or just want a very easy way to create the pages then the WYSIWYG editor is highly
recommended.

Dynamic URLS - Templates

Using the picture above as an example lets go over all of the functions.

Change Template: Allows you to select the template that you want to be in view.
*
Make sure to save any changes that you want to save before switching templates.

Add New Template: DynamicURLS allow you to store an unlimited amount of templates in the system, so if you want to create a new template just assign a new name to it, and you will have a blank page to work with.

Delete This Template: This will delete the template that is in the current view.
*WARNING, if you delete the template it is lost forever, you will not be able to retrieve it again.

Switch to RAW HTML Mode: Clicking this will change the editor from WYSIWYG to a raw editor. It will keep the same tempalte in view, but MAKE SURE TO SAVE CHANGES TO THE PAGE YOU ARE WORKING ON, BEFORE CHANGING MODES, or you will lose any changes you made.

WYSIWYG Editor

If using the WYSIWYG template editor for the first time, it may take a little time to load. Please be patient and let it load fully before quitting. It will load faster on subsequent uses.

The editor has all basic html functions that you will need, and all the additions that you will need to make your DynamicURLS personalized. The best way to learn all of the features of the editor, is to just play with it, and get familiar with all of the buttons, and find out what they do. After some practice, you will be able to make highly professional pages in no time. The two most important features are described below:

The save button:

DynamicURLS - Visual Editor
This button will need to be pressed in order to save the contents of the page you are creating. It uses Ajax to automatically save the page without needing to refresh, so it is good to save often.

The DynamicURLS Variables

sDynamicURLS - How to personalize templates
This drop down list contains all possible variables available for your copy of DynamicURLS. Its as simple as clicking on the location of the page where you want the item to show up , and selecting the value from the drop down list. It is then inserted into the template with the proper formatting, so that they will be properly parsed by the DynamicURLS engine, and display the proper information to the user.

Using the Raw HTML editor.

Using the Raw HTML editor is the same as using notepad to create web pages. Everything must be done manually, including inserting the DynamicURLS variables. Below is a list of all valid variables that the template will accept and translate based on the information stored in the user database.

Campaigns

Campaigns can be run exactly to your standards, using the templates that you want, and the users that you choose.
*Make Sure you user database, and template are set up before running your campaign.

Click on the Campaigns Tab.

Without the Unlimited Campaigns module, you are restricted on being able to only run one campaign at a time.

If you want to run another campaign, the settings from the old campaign will be overwritten by the settings from the new campaign.

The first time you click on the Campaigns tab, it will look something like this:
DynamicURLS - Campaign configuration

Last Run: The date of the last time you ran the campaign.

Last Run # User: The number of users that were included in the last campaign.

Template Used: The template you used in the Campaign.

If you have all of your users set up in the database, and your template
tweaked to your liking, then click on Run Campaign.
DynamicURLS - Assigning Users to templates

Step 1 is to choose the template that you want to use in your campaign. If you make updates later on to your template, they will automatically be presented to the DynamicURLS user, so if you notice a mistake in your template after you run the campaign, simply update the template, and the changes will automatically be included on the users DynamicURLS page.

Step 2. Select the users that you want to include in the campaign. The column on the left contains all of the possible users that are available, and the box on the left, are the users that you have chosen to include. Use the arrows to move users from one box to the other.

Once you have selected the correct template, and selected the users that you want to include, then click Submit, and the campaign is ready to go. You can then direct users to the Purl pages that were created.

A copy of the pages that were created for the users will be available for you in your reports tab. Click Export to CSV file, and you can save a copy for your records. Running another campaign will erase the csv and write the new contents over it, so make sure you save it to your computer, if you need that information.

How Do Dynamic URLS Work

Dynamic URLS is web software that generates personalized landing pages. It's comparable to an internet webpage that is running a non-stop mail-merge... a little bit more than that, too. Read on:

Moving the Mindset Away from Traditional Media

I've been challeged by some of my peers to try to explain this idea of personalized URLS and landing pages and whatnot. Many of the people with whom I am associated are near retirement, and the new concepts that the internet delivers can be somewhat abstract to many of these folks.

From a printing perspective, the argument has been that this technology is a distraction. Moreover, it's not something that generates revenue for the space that a print company occupies. Certainly, it isn't going to consume resources and enable someone to add value and charge for the new tangible product that results. For a printing company, PURLS do not mean more ink on paper so you can sell more print items...

Or does it?

In this new Attention Economy, companies are willing to spend considerable amounts in getting a user to stay just a little bit longer. Let's face it: if a visit to a website is eight seconds or less, every advantage a company has to keep the individual engaged is worth it.

This is why we created PURL Manager: because if I visit a website, and I see my name in lights, I might give you an extra three or four or ten seconds needed to learn more about you. You've obviously taken time to learn about me, right?

Anyways, in addressing this notion of selling more print, I realized that the Attention Economy is LESS about putting ink on paper, and MORE about putting MESSAGE TO MEDIUM.

Print companies, communications companies, designers, advertisers, brand managers, product managers... everyone that is trying to be heard - take note: The Attention Economy is about flexibility of medium, and it's purpose is ME... and YOU.

Capturing the audience of one is the goal. Google is doing it now: they are changing all their systems from "Search and send away" to "Engage", evidenced by the Google Toolbars, and GMail and Google PC and apps...

In a way, Google proved to us our inherent individual value: when an advertiser is willing to pay $75.00 or more for a single click, it undoubtedly means that our attention is worth significantly more.

Retrospectively, it means that EVERYONE is willing to pay... to print, to produce a commercial, to do product placements in movies... but only if the supplier can accept responsibility for conversions.

Again, it all comes back to message-to-medium: I'm sure if a print company could figure out a way to feed a banana through a printer, a rum company would pay to have their logo printed on the banana skin advertising Pina Coladas... And then think about the grocery store, getting all those free bananas...

Okay, that's my idea if anyone tries to use it!!!

Some Industry Statistics

Just in case you were wondering, here's some information on what the industry pundits are saying about PURLS and their eventual proliferation into the mainstream marketing world:

Personalization allows direct mail, which traditionally has less than 2 or 3 percent returns to obtain returns greater than 5 percent. 1. Over thirty-three percent of websites offer behavioral targeting, or relevant offers.
2. Spending on targeted marketing will jump from 575 million in 2007 to 3.8 billion in just three years
3. “The Holy Grail for online ad targeting is a combination of the behavioral technique on top of other methods, especially search… the combination will be popular: 55% of search engine advertisers would pay a premium of 11% or more for behavioral projections to help target paid search advertising…”

Landing page

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An eye-tracking Heatmap showing where a subject's eyes alight on a landing page under test.

An eye-tracking Heatmap showing where a subject's eyes alight on a landing page under test.

In online marketing a landing page, sometimes known as a lead capture page, is the page that appears when a potential customer clicks on an advertisement or a search-engine result link. The page will usually display content that is a logical extension of the advertisement or link, and that is optimized to feature specific keywords or phrases for indexing by search engines.

In pay per click (PPC) campaigns, the landing page will also be customized to measure the effectiveness of different advertisements. By adding a parameter to the linking URL, marketers can measure advertisement effectiveness based on relative click-through rates.

Types of landing page

There are two types of landing page, reference and transactional.

A reference landing page presents information that is relevant to the visitor. These can display text, images, dynamic compilations of relevant links, or other elements. Reference landing pages are effective if they meet the objectives of their publishers, which may be associations, organizations or public service entities. For many reference landing pages, effectiveness can be measured by the revenue value of the advertising that is displayed on them.

A transactional landing page seeks to persuade a visitor to complete a transaction such as filling out a form or interacting with advertisements or other objects on the landing page, with the goal being the immediate or eventual sale of a product or service. If information is to be captured, the page will usually withhold information until some minimal amount of visitor information is provided, typically an email address and perhaps a name and telephone number as well – enough to "capture the lead" and add the prospect to a mailing list.

A visitor taking the desired action on a transactional landing page is referred to as a conversion. The efficiency or quality of the landing page can be measured by its conversion rate, the percentage of visitors who complete the desired action. Since the economics of many online marketing programs are determined by the conversion rate, marketers constantly test alternatives and improvements to their landing pages.[1] Some of the testing methods used are A/B testing and multivariate testing.

Search engine optimization

Every page of a site indexed by search engines is a potential landing page.

The goal of search engine optimization (SEO) is to leave few landings to chance. The content of the page and/or links to the page are optimized for very specific, carefully researched keywords and phrases. Those keywords and phrases that are of most value for "organic" or "natural" search engine optimization are those most likely to be used by prospective customers in their search engines. Good choices will cause the site to rank higher in search engine results.

For large websites covering many products or many topics, a single home page cannot be optimized for every topic and still be relevant to all. A different approach is needed, a landing page that will not convert a visitor directly. A "hub" page is optimized for more generic, less targeted keyword phrases that have naturally a lower conversion rate than more-specific search terms. Hub landing pages serve as a "mini portal" within a site – the site establishes a number of virtual home pages, each for a broader topic.[2]

Market Intelligence

To be candid, other than the names of companies, you'll find much of this section incomplete. The reasons for now are severalfold:

1. the industry is growing so fast that I discover a new company every day;
2. the entries that I had originally were discovered by some of their domain owners and I got nastygrams telling me to remove the content, and;
3. it takes a lot of work keeping up with all the goings-on in other areas of this site.

I figure that at the very least the list will help you understand the evolution of this industry, and encourage you to return to our site to see what else we might have added.

ASP - Application Service Providers

These are players that do it all for you, including the design, the campaign support, etc. The ironic and funny thing about a lot of these players is that SO MANY of them have GLARING errors on their websites and they probably don't even have a clue!

If you are going to advertise yourself as a company that does it all, if you are going to present yourself as an expert solution provider, if you are going to show the world how it should be done -- at least start with doing it right in your own backyard. Right?

Look, we don't claim to be total experts. We do the best we can. At the same time, if someone is going to charge you upwards of $10,000 to create a custom landing page service for you... they better darn well make sure everything they do is 100%!

We're here to show you what everyone else is doing, and let you make up your mind from there. It's your money -- you go ahead and spend it the way you think is best.

Then, come see us! At least this way, we won't have to do all the educating. You'll have learned your lessons already.

3Marketeers.com

These folks are interesting. If you click around, there are probably a handful of different URLS all connected and redirecting here. They appear to be a Full service marketing agency, but there are also ties to a software company.

Their product is advertised as the Bullseye system. The graphics and whatnot seem to target the same market as a number of other companies, although I'm not sure if they are simply resellers or if they developed a proprietary technology.

Read about it here:

Accureply.com

The main thing that cracks me up about this company is that they advertise a competency in delivering PURLS. Okay, great! But try clicking on the links!!! They GO NOWHERE! The page that is called up is to a dead link. What the heck???

C'mon people. I mean, I know we're not perfect, but for crying out loud...

Well, I'm not exactly sure if they sell software. It seems like they might, but it's unclear. They offer a wide variety of solutions including design work and all that. I filled out the form, and all I got was a page that said "okay... thanks!"

What the heck is up with that? I'm supposed to be rewarded for giving you my information! Instead, I get "the hand"... i.e.: someone will get back to you.

Sheesh that's annoying! Just another example of another company that put up a web page saying they do PURLS. Blah blah blah. All talk. No action.

From the Cierant.com website:
http://cierant.com/services/purl.htm

CustomerParadigm.com

This is the ONLY company that I found that offers both ASP and Licensed solutions. They're not a marketing company per se, but rather a programming company. Okay. Again... makes better sense for most people because most marketing departments are lacking in IT resources, and rich in marketing theory. You tell them what you need... they build it. Good!

If I had the money, I probably would have bought their software. They advertise a $1500 pricetag for a single domain, which seems a bit steep for a newcomer to this technology. If it doesn't work, $1500 is kind of difficult to explain to my boss. But, it seems like their ASP solution is a lot less risky and a decent place to start.

They also advertise A LOT on Google. My guess is upwards of $100-$150 per day. So, that might also explain their high price tag. Then again, they are programmers, and maybe they found a way to hack the Google system... not likely tho'!

This company is interesting because they offer a suite of solutions at a subscription price of about $350.00 per month: but this seems to get you a lot of things. Along with a landing page component, they also include some search engine optimization, press release submission, CRM, content management, and a few other bells and whistles to boot.

Worth keeping an eye on.

Liveball - from IonInteractive.com

ION Interactive released a new piece of software which is "Software as a Service". They're calling it SaaS. The rest of us call it ASP - or application service provider, or Subscription service or whatever.

Like we need another darn acronymn to deal with.

Aside from that, I find these folks to be at least some of the hardest working. If you visit their website, they provide all kinds of how-tos, research, whitepapers, and case studies. You get a lot of their stuff for free and without registration, which is really encouraging.

Check them out! Their blog is really cool, and the video they offer on best practices is also quite informative.

This is an interesting one because it seems like they have a slightly different spin on the overall solution: a total marketing portal - of which purls are a component.

Again, another ASP.

Not knowing how robust their solution is, I would be skeptical to compare something like this against other solutions that integrate with your SFA tools like Salesforce and so on. But, if you don't have a CRM, them perhaps this is a good starting point.

Saepio.com

I can only say that it LOOKS like they offer the solution. It is in their documentation, but I have yet to try out their demo.

Sahajanand Technologies Pvt. Ltd

This company ADVERTISES purl technology correctly, but if you try to find their software or a way to contact them to find out more information, you end up in a circular reference to where you originally started.

Maybe they have a product... maybe they don't. Right now, I don't see anything.

I suspect they will be one of many up-and-coming contract coding companies that will be competing directly with our solution. It looks like this is the case right now: they list offices in Gathersberg MD, but their domain is registered to a company in India through a WHOIS lookup.

Licensed Software

Well, if you're not a hosted solution, then you are licensed. These are software providers that let you buy your own and host the product on your servers.

There is some grey area in this category because some software is really intended to help MANAGE the digital assets, rather than help to create AND manage them. In other instances, the tools are intended to help optimize the digital assets.

In some regards, a real winning solution would be to buy up a several of the solutions listed on this page, integrate them all together into a monster kick-butt app.

CustomerParadigm.com

This software currently retails for upwards of $1500.00 a license per domain.

DMXReady.com

Admittedly, this is NOT exactly a personalized URL creation tool. Rather, they offer a landing page management tool -- in other words, a central repository of webpages that act as sell sheets. Why would a webmaster want this? It would be a benefit to an agency that manages 100's of landing pages for clients. Or, maybe you are someone that sells 100's of items on Clickbank or Ebay. This gives you a mechanism to follow through and edit some of the pages.

Of course, Dynamic URLS already delivers this kind of functionality, and then some, through the use of various templates and campaigns. So, a landing page will receive a visitor by name, and customize the experience for them into something more meaningful.

This is an interesting website that offers some tremendous tools, utilities and best practices with real results. Some of their content is superb in that it provides real-time anecdotal evidence for integrated marketing strategies.

Just check out some of this stuff from their website:

MarketingSherpa.com

I would probably attribute MarketingSherpa as one of the primary influences for a lot of content on this site. While their subscription is fairly high at about $400 a year, they will refund that money to you on a pro-rated basis. So, if you need to get some fast facts and research to support a project -- this is one way to go! Worst case scenario, you sign up for a month and pay about $35.00. That's an easy number to digest even in the worst of times.

Here's a bunch of free stuff that they offer:

    Personalized landing pages

You don't have to reinvent the wheel: if you have a website, or a landing page designed already, simply import the elements into the supplied rich-text editor.

The editor will allow you to customize the landing page using common-sense tags like {city}, {company} and {state}.  Whenever DynamicURLS sees a tag like this, it looks up the person's name, and personalizes the page automatically!

purls, p-urls, rurls, response urls, personal urls

You are not limited to personalizing your pages with name, address or city.  Instead, you can add dozens of personalized elements.  And, with a bit of skill and practice, you can even customize images on the pages, too - creating a truly personalized and unique experience for a visitor to your website!

    landing page templates

DynamicURLS software has built-in segmenting and grouping logic.  This lets you perform powerful and complex sorting and filtering activities in seconds!

This will let you build mini-campaigns and target smaller groups of prospects enabling more cost effective niche strategies.

    one-to-one marketing

Other companies charge you hundreds and even thousands of dollars EVERY MONTH to do exactly what the DynamicURLS software does for a fraction of the price!

    1-to-1, direct mail, variable data

You'll know the DynamicURLS software is working because you'll get email alerts as soon as anyone visits their personal URL.

The software performs an instant lookup on the database and emails you with the information stored in the system, saving you the hassle of having to lookup their contact information and helping you get on your way to closing more deals.

After the campaign is over, we keep track of everything that happened on your landing pages.

This is helpful for success reporting, but it's also useful for follow-ups and running new campaigns, too!

Where are people clicking on your landing pages?  Are they attempting to contact your support departments?  Are they trying to view other products?  Where are the hot spots?  Use this aggregate information to help monitor and discover areas of improvement and opportunity.

    A Complete Overview

The hottest topic over the last year has been, without a doubt, that of Landing Page Optimization. Consultants are researching it, marketers are investing in it, and new service providers are springing up all over the place claiming to have THE NEXT INSANELY GREAT THING!

Of course, as everyone starts to stake their claim in this new niche, an entirely new lexicon emerges as well with a treasure trove of acronyms, trademarks, patents-pending, and all the other phrases that go with the gold rush.

    So, what is it?

Well, I guess the best way to describe it is to frame everything as a "before" and "after" scenario. Let's call the "before" as "The Internet", and let's call the "after" as "Web 2.0". Based on this timeline then, I would suppose that if The Internet was about capturing visitors, then Web 2.0 is about keeping your visitors engaged.

Many companies are investing heavily into technologies and programs that keep visitors engaged. On the front-end - which is all the stuff that a user sees on a website - companies are redesigning their web page layouts so that your experience is as positive as it can be. They are scruitinizing EVERYTHING: the number of words, the font, the font size, the colors, the blend of pictures to words, the number of syllables in words, the size of graphics... and they are testing all this stuff every time you visit their page. On the backend, this is where all the information is collected, and it includes everything from who you are, to how many times you visited, what time, day, date and what kind of software you used to reach the site. Did you click Button A or Button B? Did you click on this link or that. Did you try to click on something that WASN'T a link... and so on.

Whew! Okay. Now... HOW you got to a particular website is ALSO very important. The "doorway" page that brought you in is also known as "The Landing Page" -- the place that creates the first impression. In this space, it is every marketer's goal to minimize the number of unpredicted visits to your site. Some of the tactics that are employed include re-jigging error pages (i.e.: page not found errors), robots.txt files (to tell the search engines which page to visit and which to ignore) and page redirects which causes a visitor to redirect to another part of the site when a page has expired or was erased for whatever reason.

    Why is this done?

A real world comparison is moving and having your mail redirected. In the last ten years, how many times did you move? Okay, how much mail do you get today from someone that lived at your current address ten years ago? For many of you, you'll know that you still get mail from people lived at your address LONG ago. Well, websites are no different. The OWNER'S name stays the same, but sometimes the address kinda changes. So when someone tries to visit you, they may be using an address book from five years ago. By address book, I mean a link from someone else's website. Even though the search engines update their directories fairly frequently doesn't mean everyone else does.

So, as we tighten everything up, we also have opportunities to deliver a better experience to the visitor. After all, we know where you are coming from, so why not make your visit a good one.

    ENTER PERSONALIZED URLS

PURLS, also known as P-URLS, PERSONALIZED URLS, and in some cases RESPONSE URLS (RURLS), are website addresses that try to alter the context of a visit just enough to make it palitible for you to stay a little bit longer. A real estate agent might create an address like http://www.RealEstateWebsite.com/123_Main/ where 123 Main is the address of your house. Or, a search engine consultant might use the technology to drive targeted traffic to a website using a library of specific keywords and phrases. in its most basic form, it usually consists of a url and a person's name, taking the form of http://www.MyDomain.com/Firstname.Lastname/. The appended signifier tells the software to retrieve everything associated with it, and present it according to a series of defined rules. To this end, we end up creating a piece of software that greets you by name, and has the capability of presenting a host of unique details to you that you have previously indicated as having an interest.

The goal of all this is to tailor your visit just enough to make you want to read more, click more, and ultimately BUY more. When a web marketer can create a page that uniquely identify you, present offers that you want, and NOT create more work for you by having forms already filled in for you... well, I say IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!

That's why we created Dynamic URLS: to quickly and easily empower direct marketers with the ability to create unlimited personalized landing pages, submit the details to a printing company for merging with variable print software, and simultaneously create companion web pages and emails so that a direct marketing campaign has complete 360-degree coverage: print, web, email, and anywhere else you might put a personal url.

Use DynamicURLS to engage your customer a little longer, get their attention, get them to click more into your site, and listen to them! Every click tells a story.

(Wait did someone trademark that last phrase? If not, it's MINE!)
